tubepressThis version has some really cool new features, and I recommend that anyone using a previous version upgrade.

  • Now with five options on where to play the main video
    • Normally (at the top of your gallery)
    • In a popup window
    • In a new window all by itself
    • In its original YouTube page
    • Using Thickbox (experimental, but very cool!)
  • Bug fix regarding HTML special characters in video titles

I’ve also moved all comments regarding TubePress to the main TubePress page, and I’d ask that if you have a problem/question/comment, please post it there. That’s also where you can download the latest version. Enjoy!

jedi mind tricksJedi Mind Tricks is a group from Philly that I stumbled upon while listening to KEXP’s podcast. It’s rare that I’m able to find a new underground hip hop group that really appeals to me, but these guys really deliver with powerful lyrics and unique, complex sounds to back them up. Check out their newest album, “Servants in Heaven, Kings in Hell,” and specifically the songs “Heavy Metal Kings” and “Outlive the War.”

I won’t try to get into doing any sort of amateur-hour music review, but I will say that they sound like a mix of Wu Tang, the Gravediggaz, and J5. Here’s a snippet from their bio:

“While most rap producers are content to employ one, perhaps two, repetitious loops, Stoupe continues to redefine the role of rap producer by incorporating upwards of fifty tracks inclusive of samples, live instrumentation, and other such sound effects, effectively pushing the limits of his own signature style while further solidifying his deserved reputation as one of rap’s most celebrated composers since Wu-Tang Clan’s The RZA.”

A few weeks ago, YouTube quietly changed the behavior of their API that TubePress utilizes. The change produced some buzz among the TubePress user community, mainly because it really changed the way that someone’s “favorites” are displayed; it now only shows the latest 10 posts, instead of the entire “favorites” collection.

I, like a lot of TubePress users, were disappointed. It was a lot more fun to see all of your favorites at once, instead of hiding the majority of the list.

Around the same time all this went down, I sent in a question to the YouTube dev team to see what the dilly was. Finally, they got back to me with a rather thorough explanation that I’ll share with you below. Haven’t had a chance to test out their recommendations with playlists, but I’m anxious to try. I should also note that the YouTube API doesn’t have any playlist capabilities, but when and if they do include it, you can be sure that I’ll put that functionality into TubePress. Happy TubePressing.

Hi there,This was a change done through engineering. It is supposed to encourage the use of playlists to organize your videos.

There is a way to arrange your playlist. Go to My Account and then under videos(on the top right) click “playlist.” Then click the playlist you want to arrange (eg: 1) eg: http://www.youtube.com/my_playlists/p=1 Then on the right hand side there will be a box with numbers. 1 being the top. Place the number that corresponds with the order you want to put them, in the box on the right hand side. Then click the rearrange button.

Unfortunately, at this time there is no way to rearrange your favorites list. However, once people understand how easy it is to use the playlist feature to organize their favorites. They won’t want to use favorites for other than a kind of quick list or a short list of videos that is easy to access.

If you cannot find your favorites, remember that as you add them, the most recently added video will go to the bottom of the list (not the top as it once did). Please check here for your added videos. Also, remember that if you had a favorite video that was taken down on the site, it will no longer be shown. It will also cause the order to change.

Please note whether adding or deleting a video to/from your “favorites” list, it can take some time for this to process and post on the site. Please be patient.

For those that are still having trouble or have found glitches in their playlists/favorites try clearing your cache and deleting cookies and see if that doesn’t help.

I hope this explanation helps! Happy holidays!

Regards,
Wynston

tubepressThis version includes fixes for a major bug in PHP4. Thanks to Fabien and Paige for reporting it.
The problem, in case you’re interested, had to do with the way PHP4 deals with object referencing in ‘foreach’ loops. I should thank Johannes Tiefenbrunner at Objective Development for helping me figure out the issue.

As always, you can download TubePress from its plugin page.

tubepress This is a big release with lots of changes. The bulk of the functionality that I have planned for the plugin is in this version. From here on out, it will be mostly bells and whistles. What’s new in this version:

  • Override global settings on a per-page basis! This will allow you to have one page with your videos (that you’ve uploaded), another page with your YouTube favorites, etc.
  • Choose which meta information (author, rating, description, etc) you want to display
  • Lots of optimizations and bug fixes

Download TubePress for free from the plugin page.

Coming soon:

  • Pagination
  • Ability to display videos in a popup window
  • Language localizations

Believe it or not, I have a life outside of my pet project, TubePress. Here are some pictures of what I’ve been up to lately.
You care!

CIMG2060.JPG First, we have a tour aboard the USS Ronald Reagan, the Navy’s newest carrier. This was arranged as part of the New Professional program at Spawar. It was badass. We got full access to the ship, including to some of the secret areas. Yes, I got to stand behind the helm!

CIMG1534.JPG Next, we have some lovely pictures of an equally lovely weekend I spent with Susanne in Asheville, NC. She has one of the greatest dogs I’ve ever met. Asheville is a nice town. It has a very anti North Carolina feel to it, whatever that means. Good times.

CIMG1597.JPG Every year, Marine Corps Air Station Miramar holds an airshow. Holy awesome. It really appeals to my masculine side.

CIMG1655.JPG This past weekend, I finally made my way out to the desert with Chief and Matt for some camping. It was a really nice break from the everyday grind here in San Diego. We found a nice little spot in Anza Borrego State Park, which is about an hour and a half outside the city. It’s amazing how quickly the landscape changes when you head inland. Matt also has some great pictures.
