Here’s what happens when you step on a big piece of glass while headed down to the beach to go surfing and your foot has to get soaked and cleaned in iodine.
TubePress 0.8 (bug fixes) released
Nov 17, 2006 TubePress 13 Comments
This version includes fixes for a major bug in PHP4. Thanks to Fabien and Paige for reporting it.
The problem, in case you’re interested, had to do with the way PHP4 deals with object referencing in ‘foreach’ loops. I should thank Johannes Tiefenbrunner at Objective Development for helping me figure out the issue.
As always, you can download TubePress from its plugin page.

This is a big release with lots of changes. The bulk of the functionality that I have planned for the plugin is in this version. From here on out, it will be mostly bells and whistles. What’s new in this version:
- Override global settings on a per-page basis! This will allow you to have one page with your videos (that you’ve uploaded), another page with your YouTube favorites, etc.
- Choose which meta information (author, rating, description, etc) you want to display
- Lots of optimizations and bug fixes
Download TubePress for free from the plugin page.
Coming soon:
- Pagination
- Ability to display videos in a popup window
- Language localizations
Here are some really wonderful pictures

Believe it or not, I have a life outside of my pet project, TubePress. Here are some pictures of what I’ve been up to lately.
You care!
First, we have a tour aboard the USS Ronald Reagan, the Navy’s newest carrier. This was arranged as part of the New Professional program at Spawar. It was badass. We got full access to the ship, including to some of the secret areas. Yes, I got to stand behind the helm!
Next, we have some lovely pictures of an equally lovely weekend I spent with Susanne in Asheville, NC. She has one of the greatest dogs I’ve ever met. Asheville is a nice town. It has a very anti North Carolina feel to it, whatever that means. Good times.
Every year, Marine Corps Air Station Miramar holds an airshow. Holy awesome. It really appeals to my masculine side.
This past weekend, I finally made my way out to the desert with Chief and Matt for some camping. It was a really nice break from the everyday grind here in San Diego. We found a nice little spot in Anza Borrego State Park, which is about an hour and a half outside the city. It’s amazing how quickly the landscape changes when you head inland. Matt also has some great pictures.

The Nightmare is Over

After two weeks and two days (not that I was counting) of server downtime, we’re back to normal. What happened? I was doing some regular maintenance on the system (updating config files for updated software), and managed to completely break our authentication scheme. That means that nobody could authenticate to the server, and thus nobody could really do anything to modify the server. Talk about security!
The guys over at Waveform, our colocation provider, were pretty great in helping us get back online, even after I nagged the hell out of them. Thanks, Waveform!
I also put in a few secure backdoors, so this type of thing will never happen again. My apologies for all of the server’s users and visitors.

San Diego! After two weeks, I’m still pretty blown away that I actually live here now. Feels like an extended vacation. The weather is basically perfect every day (even though we’re in a supposed heat wave), people are friendly, and there’s stuff to do! Cost of living is a bit high ($3.50/gallon - it’s good to be single and employed). But there’s cheap Mexican restaurants on every corner and I love it.Work with the Navy started this past week and has been slow to start. I’m optimistic that once things will get more interesting. The real work of the government apparently happens underneath mountains of paperwork and bureaucracy. Here’s where my building is. It’s a rough life.My big new exciting venture is surfing. We go out about every other day on average. It’s so, so nice to be in the clear water on a surfboard while watching the sun go down. Surfing is definitely not as easy as it looks, but I think I’m getting the hang of it.
